  1. Translations of german philosophy come with little side-booklets that explain the made up words to non-german speakers. Usually a page or two for words that germans just intuitivly understand the first time they see it.

  2. I've never heard or read "Ruinenlust" before, but then I find myself fascinated by historic sites that are nothing but a pile of rubble…..so thanks, for giving it a name, you've proven to be very german'ish!

  3. I learned German on my own, over the course of 4 years. I was obsessed with it. I would listen to German lessons in my car, I would read and learn 10-20 new words each day. At some point I started thinking in German… in the end I went to Germany and spoke fluently with natives. Except that time I was in Munich, trying to rent a car. The guy spoke to me in Bavarian dialect, and I had absolutely no idea what he was saying!!! I just nodded along as he was cracking jokes while walking me to the car…

Two of my favorite words are:

Streichholzerschahtel (box of matches) Versicherungsgeselschaft (Insurance company)

  4. One crucial mess up with German is Hund and jung. Instead of just telling you this I’ll put you in what looks like a conversation.

You: Hallo, können ich berühren iher Hund?
    Her: ja!
    VS
You: Hallo, Können ich berühren iher Jung?
    Her: Was!? Pfui nein!
